Jacaranda Dream

Margaret St & Edward St, Brisbane City QLD
My practice as a visual artist focuses on the emotional resonance of natural forms and their ability to foster community connection. In this work for Artforce, I have reinterpreted Brisbane’s iconic Jacaranda as a symbol of shared identity and inclusive spirit. By moving away from literal representation, I utilise abstract organic circles to represent falling petals, focusing entirely on the harmony of shape and colour composition. This dreamlike violet palette is intentionally chosen for its universal appeal, designed to offer a sense of wonder for children and a moment of nostalgic calm for adults. To further embed the work within a collective narrative, I have integrated star motifs and a stylised ‘bin chicken’ character. These elements act as visual echoes of my teammates’ designs, turning an individual signal box into part of a collaborative story across the city. My goal is to transform an industrial structure into a soft, atmospheric landmark. Through the fusion of these whimsical characters and abstract floral forms, I hope to express my vision of Brisbane as a place where nature, art, and people of all ages can find a sense of belonging. It is an invitation to celebrate an environment defined by inclusivity, where our diverse community can flourish together in an eternal bloom.
