‘Growth’ explores the ongoing transformation of Darra. Starting with clay and brickworks, Darra has grown to include residential, industrial, commercial, schools, temples and churches, rail lines and roadways. The intersection at Harcourt and Ipswich Roads sits between residential and industrial, with curling roads and freeways passing all around it. The traffic box is near native trees, and this inspired the negative space and branching elements. As the bricks rise through the artwork they gradually separate, becoming filled with colour and transforming into the negative space of the surrounding trees. The flowing movement and colour represent the many people, experiences and ideas that have shaped Darra and Brisbane itself over time. Individual pieces remain distinct while becoming part of a larger whole. This artwork aims to make people passing by feel part of the larger community that is represented in the tree.
