The Regatta

Coronation Dve & Sylvan Rd, Toowong QLD
This traffic signal box is located next to the iconic Regatta Hotel in Toowong. The Regatta (in its current form) was built in 1886 and was named after the popular boating events held on the Toowong Reach. The proposed design reinforces the long and continuing legacy of rowing on the Brisbane River and its strong association with this particular site. The composition is structured in three tiers, accommodating the form and components of the electrical box. Each tier represents a rowing team, with the boats wrapping neatly around each of the four side panels. Repetition ensures that a clear continuing story unfolds irrespective of the angle from which it is viewed. From the road, drivers will be able to quickly grasp the visuals, whilst pedestrians can engage more closely with individual character details. Primary colours and simple shapes create a friendly and welcoming illustration that is fun and educational for everyone! That’s the best kind of artwork!
