Party Animals

Wickham St & Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley QLD
My concept for this work is heavily inspired by the site of installation and the buzzing nightlife of Fortitude Valley. It shows a vibrant scene of passersby crossing the busy intersection towards Brunswick Street Mall, surrounded by the familiar and iconic buildings of Fortitude Valley. Each person crossing the road is adorned with an animal’s head, leaning into the idea of ‘party animals’, as this area is the central party destination of Brisbane. My work combines digital and 2D media through the hand-painted animal heads, as well as a collaborative drawing decorating the sky, which was completed by each member of the QUT Artforce project. The use of the collaborative piece of artwork within my design acts as a visual echo to my fellow artists within this project, creating a sense of a visual narrative across the city. The scene shown in my work creates a sense of familiarity and connection for drivers who may stop at the lights to see people passing through the crossing, mirroring the subject matter of my work. The bright and saturated colours also allow my work to stand out in passing as it contrasts with its surroundings. Finally, combining human figures with animal heads acts as a vessel for unity amongst partygoers, seeing past physical identity and rejoicing in the art of letting loose and having a good time.
