Geocaching is a global, real world treasure hunt where people use GPS coordinates to locate hidden containers in parks, city streets, and wilderness areas all over the globe. Once a cache is found, adventurers sign the physical logbook, swap small trinkets, and share their discovery online to keep the global adventure going. On behalf of the passionate local geocaching community, this project aligned with Geocaching’s international Maker Magic initiative – a movement designed to celebrate and promote high quality, creative cache hides that turn ordinary urban exploration into an extraordinary experience for locals and visitors.
This ‘World’s Greatest Treasure Hunt’ artwork by David and Jess Warren, directly celebrates this global phenomenon by reimagining the iconic Brisbane River as a giant cartographic playground. Presiding over this colourful landscape is Signal the Frog, the official mascot of geocaching, who watches over a hidden world of secret containers and the restless, joyful spirit of the find. The project invites everyday commuters to tune into the hidden side of the city by turning a standard piece of street infrastructure into an interactive visual game. It acts as a bright reminder that adventure is waiting around every corner, encouraging everyone to embrace the thrilling joy of discovery right under their noses.
For avid geocachers, the signal box is also the location clue for a hidden cache!
