In ‘Park Play’, I have combined digital illustration with photographic textures to portray a bustling, colourful park scene. As viewers move closer to the work, a plethora of micronarratives are revealed. This storytelling technique appeals to both curious children and adults, as viewers can pause to study each humorous, exciting or peaceful narrative occurring between the characters in the scene. I layered these digital illustrations above hand-painted textures that form the grass, trees, and picnic rug. These textures were created by building up paint colours and then scraping away at them in scribble patterns. Reminiscent of childhood play, curiosity and unrestrained creativity, this process aims to encourage these attitudes when entering the Parkland.
‘Park Play’ encapsulates the diversity of experiences, interests, and activities of the people who frequent Roma Street Parkland. It represents Brisbane as a city that celebrates our iconic green spaces, and the community and connection those provide.
