Every year there are around 70 Artforce Brisbane painting opportunities across the City on traffic signal boxes (TSBs) and a small number of Energex Pad-mount Transformers. Approximately 20 boxes are allocated for painting every three months.
TSBs are released via this website and are allocated to eligible applicants on a first-in first-served basis. Boxes can be directly allocated to schools and community groups too so get in touch if that’s you! All painting allocations are approved by Brisbane Council – it’s their program after all!
When applicants are allocated a box, they have three weeks to prepare and submit an artwork design.
Artwork designs connect in some way to their locations. Whether it’s about an amazing building, a beautiful natural feature or something cultural, historical or wild and wonderful, there are so many stories in our communities waiting to be told through this medium. Bold designs, visual patterns that ‘wrap’ the box, along with positive socially inclusive messages also prove popular.

Designs are assessed and approved by Council. All participants must sign an Artforce Brisbane Participant Agreement.

Artists are notified when artwork designs are approved. Local Brisbane City Council Ward Offices also get involved – artists collect their equipment from the Ward Office where their box is located. The box of equipment contains the required materials, including paint, safety cones, dropsheets, safety vest, masking tape, sanding block, etc. and a comprehensive Artforce Brisbane Manual which includes safety information, painting procedures, and other instructions.
Painting typically happens within 18 days, covering three weekends. It generally takes two-to-three days to paint a box. Once the painting is completed, artists return the equipment box to the Ward Office.
We love seeing photographs of the finished artwork and work as it’s in progress so we ask you to submit your pics to Artforce Brisbane for inclusion in the Artforce Brisbane website gallery and for promotional use by Brisbane City Council.
