When night falls

‘When night falls’ explores the relationship between Australia’s huge variety of flora and fauna and the nightlife that surrounds the location of this traffic signal box. Situated near a busy clubbing and entertainment area, I wanted my concept to reflect that same energy of the site while reimagining what occurs in that space after dark. With the street’s constant movement of people and music, I wanted to contrast this with a quieter hidden nightlife. Through the use of Australia’s native marine life, I’ve turned the night sky into a big open ocean where the animals come out to play with the stars. This design reflects the idea of a different life after dark, showing how we share the streets with all these magnificent creatures without even knowing when they have emerged, our flora and fauna often unnoticed within the city landscape. In response to the brief, I aimed to create a design that visually connected its location with Australia’s “locals” such as its native plants and animals, so as to highlight the coexistence between urban culture and the natural ecosystem, encouraging passersby to reconsider the life and activity when night falls.
