Race Like a Girl

Nudgee Road & Racecourse Village Shopping Centre, Ascot QLD
Race like a girl is a collaborative project involving 5 young girls aged from 6 to 10 years old. The girls – all of whom play various sports – were inspired by the racecourse adjacent to the box and were determined to showcase female heroes in horse racing. The bold colours represent the tenacity required to make it in elite sport as a female. The striking racing silks represent the amour that is often necessary in a male dominated sport to stand alone as a female. The horseshoes are a symbol of luck and hope. The main jockey is a portrait of Michelle J. Payne – winner of 2015 Melbourne Cup and first female to win this event.
