Our Hands have Voices: Auslan

Waterworks Rd & Gresham St, Ashgrove QLD
Our artwork depicts hands making the BUTTERFLY Auslan sign, which are visually transforming into colourful butterflies. Butterflies are often used as a symbol for Deaf people, as butterflies are thought to be deaf, and for beauty. Handshapes and movement patterns make the words that we use to communicate in Auslan. The title conveys dual meanings – that Auslan is a beautiful language conveyed by using our hands, and that Deaf people can use Auslan to have a say in things that matter (a voice). Our intention is to create community awareness of Auslan language and the need for Auslan access for inclusion, as well as to support Deaf people to feel confident to advocate for their inclusion. Our Auslan Girl Guides group meets in Bardon, close to where this traffic box is located.
