Lightning Storm Wizardry

Ipswich Road & Junction Terrace, Annerley QLD
Intense and powerful lightning storms are a common experience here in Brisbane, and they feel core to the experiences of anyone living in Meanjin. It’s easy to feel small during an intense storm. This artwork feels like a wish fulfilment, like being powerful enough to control and channel the elements in the midst of them. Instead, the powerful wizard figure with their cool dramatic pose is also a little silly, in a big yellow raincoat, pyjamas, and missing one wellie. I think it’s fun to take the image of a strange and powerful wizard and put them in a mundane situation, like being caught outside in a rainstorm in your PJs. I have been creating this magical-themed art of Wizards and Witches in everyday situations for many years now, and I find they really connect with the community of young queer folks who support my work. There’s something inspirational about the Wizard who chooses to live in the modern world – like there’s a secret only they know, but you as the viewer are in on it as well.
