Just Roll With It

Webster Rd & Billabong St & Wolverhampton St , Stafford QLD
‘Just Roll With It’ aims to pay homage to one of Stafford’s greatest icons, the Stafford Skate Centre. The Stafford Skate Centre was beloved by Stafford residents and Brisbanites in general and has been sorely missed since its closure. The roller skates on the front and rear of the box feature a nod to the Skate Centre logo. The retro flowers, roller skating quote, and the bright colour scheme, aim to make passersby feel sunny and positive. The lace of the roller skate is positioned to look like the Brisbane River, this ties the artwork not only to Stafford but to greater Brisbane as well.

KEEP CALM AND SKATE ON

Grace McFarlane’s ‘Just Roll With It’ pays homage to the iconic Stafford Skate Centre, which offered all a space to skate socially, play inline hockey, speed skating, artistic skating and roller hockey for 49 years (1972-2021).

Grace’s design references the skate centre by encouraging viewers to ‘Just roll with it’, and features roller skates on the front and rear of the box, retro flowers, and bright colours to cheer up passersby. The wild and wiggly blue lace from the skate even recalls the Brisbane river! Grace designed this to signify the local landmark’s ties to both Stafford and the wider Brisbane community.

As this box is located in Stafford, Grace sourced ideas from the Brisbane subreddit to get ideas for her design, asking Staffordians, past and present, about their favourite places and memories of the area. The beloved Stafford Skate Centre was the clear winner, providing a lot of nostalgia for many respondents!
