Carmel’s Tram

Vulture St & Hamstead Rd & Edmonstone St , South Brisbane QLD
Carmel Court, the building adjacent to my traffic signal box was built in 1937 as rental accommodation for a booming workforce that wanted to live close to the tram lines which once ran along Vulture Street. My traffic signal box design pays homage to the Art Deco architectural style that was so popular at this time provides a snapshot into the local history of the area. A top section was added to the traffic signal box and so the original artwork, painted in 2020, has been extended by adding in some more detailed close-up imagery of Carmel Court and its Art Deco style architecture. The design also features residents waving from a balcony wearing outfits typical of the period as a further extension of the Art Deco theme.
