Bin Chicken Battle

Brunswick St & Robertson St, Fortitude Valley QLD
I am an artist obsessed with painting animals and I am an unabashed fan of the unofficial mascot of The Valley, the Ibis. I think the toughness of tattoo-inspired style and colour schemes fit the scrappy nature of these birds brilliantly, and Fortitude Valley is a perfect setting for a Bin Chicken Food Fight! The friend of the Bin Chicken, the elusive and mythical Squidfoot, sneaks in to claim some of the food bounty.

STREET SMART

‘Bin Chicken Battle’ by Kat Derrick in collaboration with Nick Rees brings humour, attitude and local character to the streets, celebrating Brisbane’s infamous unofficial mascot, the ibis.

An unabashed fan of the much maligned ‘bin chicken’, Kat leans into a bold, tattoo-inspired style and colour palette that mirrors the scrappy resilience of these iconic birds. The toughness of the visual language amplifies their personality, turning an often-regarded urban nuisance into a defiant local hero.

You must be a resident of Brisbane ie. living within the Brisbane City Council area.
You must not be an employee of Brisbane City Council.
You must not have painted more than two traffic signal boxes in a four year period and not in consecutive years.
