Then, Now and After

Brunswick St & Ivory St & Berwick St, Fortitude Valley QLD
‘Then, Now and After’ is an abstracted interpretation of the topographical layout of the Fortitude Valley district and surrounds. While the iconic Brisbane river (Maiwar) snakes its way throughout the work, vivid, complex and symbolic topography create a playful map of our beautiful city. The work invites the viewer to find meaning in the many organic and geometric forms that populate the piece; some being obvious, other surreal and abstracted.

MAPPING THE IMAGINARY

Sarge Jhorgenson’s artwork, ‘Then, Now and After’, transforms the urban landscape into a playful, poetic map.

This evocative artwork is an abstracted reimagining of the inner city and a vibrant topographical map.  Iconic curves of the Brisbane River snake through a dense field of vivid patterns and symbolic forms. Viewers are invited to navigate a playful version of the city where recognisable landmarks meet surreal, imaginative terrain.

A Brisbane-based multidisciplinary artist, author, and poet, Sarge Jhorgenson is known for a bold and colourful aesthetic that frequently captures the soul of Queensland. Whether depicting stylised coastal landscapes, native flora, or nostalgic snapshots of suburban life, his work reflects a deep curiosity about the human experience. His creative practice often bridges the gap between the visual and the literary, splicing his paintings with the same observational wit and dark humour found in his poetry and short stories.

For Jhorgenson, participating in the Artforce Brisbane program is an opportunity to translate a personal passion for the city into a public, accessible format. ‘Then, Now and After’ transforms a functional piece of street infrastructure into a layered exploration of place, celebrating the evolution of Brisbane’s identity while enlivening the streetscape with a sense of wonder and curiosity.
