Ama Piknini

281 MacArthur Ave (roadside at roundabout), Hamilton QLD
This box showcases to the community the Torres strait Islander side of the Indigenous community where there are sea animals and the Torres Strait Islander flag visible to the cars driving down the road. To me the artwork has a sentimental meaning. The word ‘Ama’ is the Torres Strait word for mother, and the word ‘piknini’ is the word for child. The English meaning is mother’s child. This to me is about my grandmother who passed away. Part of this artwork was created with emotions of grief but also the emotions of freedom. The artwork tells a story: with the front showing the family together through the orcas then the turtle being my grandmother in the next life; the back of the box shows a figure walking on a path to the light, this is my grandmother going home, to be with her family again and towards freedom. So to the community eye, it shows just animals and a person but to me, it shows the story of my grandma’s life.
