A Leadlight Life

Kemp Place (Pedestrian Crossing) & All Hallows, Fortitude Valley QLD
My work has been inspired by my passion for leadlighting as a form of artwork while blending into the historical Brisbane All Hallows’ School Chapel. The school, and later chapel, were built in the early 1850s and became a fixture in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. I then explored some of the important historical moments in the surrounding areas. This includes images signifying the blue water lilies and tortoises that the area was named after by the traditional custodians. Then along the flowing river I chose to highlight the importance of the school and education of women. The trees represent the scarlet umbrella and the princess tree, named by Winifred Moore an early 1900s journalist. I hope to inspire the thousands of young women who pass this area every day on their way to this historical school to reflect on the past and what contribution they can make to Brisbane now and in the future.
