Once upon a time

Oxley train station & Cook St, Oxley QLD
I found some interesting facts about the Oxley Railway Station on the Oxley-Chelmer History Group website. The Oxley Railway Station was first opened in 1874 and is significant as the oldest surviving island platform brick station building on the Brisbane suburban system. Along with the development of the station, the Oxley Ham and Bacon factory was established and was purchased by Foggitt Jones & Co which then became the most successful and enduring businesses of the time until the closure in 1992. The quality ham and cheese produced by the company were served in many places. I want to picture a classic café around the time that was related to the development of the station.

Oxley’s history revisited

Constance Chang’s artwork, ‘Once upon a time’ delves into the history of Oxley where the Energex Padmount Transformer is located.

Through her own research, Constance discovered that the Oxley Railway Station opened in 1874 and is the oldest surviving island platform brick station building on the Brisbane suburban system! Around the time the station was being built, the Oxley Ham and Bacon factory was also established, eventually becoming one of the most successful and enduring businesses of the time until its closure in 1992. The ham and cheese produced by the factory was served in many venues across town similar to the butchery and classic café featured in her artwork.
